Pienza - Val d'Orcia - Siena - Tuscany

Cretaiole, on land of Etruscan origin, crowns a panoramic hilltop with beautiful vistas of iconic Tuscany. The ancient farmhouse’s exterior has been so beautifully preserved that you will seem to be transported to the 14th century when it was first built. Touch its stones, and your curiosity about its “story” cannot help but engage your imagination.

Everywhere you look are nature and wildlife. In the woods you will find large stands of oak and cypress, in the fields below are roe deer, pheasants, hares, and porcupines; in every corner are wildflowers and fresh herbs—poppies, broom, rosemary, and sage; and every spring there are kittens waiting for you to cuddle.

You will find so many different kinds of places to call your own while you enjoy a good book from our library, a glass of wine, or a delicious slice of pecorino cheese. Perhaps you will choose the beautiful, flower-laden courtyard; or sway softly in the hammock near the olive orchard; or swing gently in the glider on the crest of the hill looking toward the village-scape of Pienza. In any season, the veranda beckons you to come within, rain or shine.

Fresh spring water from Monte Amiata, comes directly to Cretaiole. Next to the vineyard and centuries-old olive grove is Luciano’s vegetable garden, where he grows lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers, eggplant, onions, green beans, fennel, basil, and parsley. Whatever is growing during your visit, you are invited to enjoy to your heart’s content.

Cretaiole also means meeting other people from all over the world, sharing passions and interests, and socializing with Luciano in the evening as he encourages you to try his grappa and vin santo.

You will enjoy exploring the trails that lead from Cretaiole to many beautiful places: the town of Pienza, the iconic chapel called Cappella di Vitaleta, and the ancient Pieve di Corsignano (country church). Enormous Monte Amiata, Tuscany’s tallest mountain, provides an impressive backdrop for the entire valley.

Take some time each day to immerse yourself in the comfort and beauty that surrounds Cretaiole—your home in Tuscany.
